An inmate at the Arizona State Prison Complex in Douglas escaped from a work crew Thursday afternoon, fleeing in a city-owned vehicle.
Lonnie Smith was working at the Huachuca City Landfill when he escaped between 12:30 and 1 p.m., officials from the Arizona Department of Corrections said.
Prison authorities notified multiple law enforcement agencies and deployed tracking teams to find Smith.
Smith began his sentence March 5 after a conviction for a drug paraphernalia violation and misconduct involving a weapon. He was scheduled to be released in June 2012, officials said.
It is unknown at this time what kind of vehicle the inmate fled in or how he got to it.
