PHOENIX -- An inmate at the Lower Buckeye Jail was seriously injured after he and his cellmate got into a fight overnight.

According to Lt. Brian Lee, spokesman for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, detention officers found Wietse Ten Boden, 45, lying in a pool of blood in his cell shortly before 4 a.m. Friday.

His cellmate, Lamont Rider, 38, reportedly was sitting passively on his bunk when officers made the discovery.

Lee said that the preliminary investigation indicates that the security tower officer was watching two other detention officers conducting a cell block security walk in the opposite pod when a nearby inmate sounded his intercom button saying he thought he heard cries for help coming from the cell next to him.

Boden was jailed on Tuesday for sexual assault charges against a 15-year-old girl and was a cellmate with Rider for less than 48 hours when the incident occurred.

Rider was jailed on a minor assault charge that carried a $200 bond. Lee said Rider has no prior booking history in Maricopa County but does have a history of arrests in California, mostly of a non-violent nature.

Both men requested administrative segregation for fear of their safety in general population, according to Lee.

Boden went into surgery at Maricopa Medical Center and is listed in serious condition. Depending on the outcome of Boden's medical condition, Rider may face homicide or attempted homicide charges.

The crime is still being investigated.
