Minutes after the incident was controlled by officers the entire recreation yard exploded with inmates fighting and stabbing each other with homemade weapons. In total 10 inmates went to the hospital some with multiple stab wounds.

I have sat back from the start of this web site and not said anything. I am now ready to say something. That things have gotten better for the most part a morey. The moral between staff is much better. We have really good sgt's and a good lt. The Captain is really good to. much better the the last one. This Captain we have now at least has a backbone. the incident on saturday never should of happened. We had 17 staff members there that is not enough to run that yard as normal. This is not just a one time thing this happens about 5out of the 7 days in the week. alot of times we are shorter then that. and the DW makes the call to run as normal. He puts our lives and our safety at risk. He wants to say that it is downtown that makes that call that is B.S. He makes that call he is just to chicken to make the call. He also wants to say well you don't understand you are right I don't know how you can not care about officer safety. Our sgts and lts tell him no and take a lot of flake for it. I would like to thank them thank you. On saturday that never should of happened. we should of been locked down and they should of been fed in house. the DW made the call that no we will slow feed on yard and feed as normal on the other yard. Had he had a set and cared about staff he would of made that call. When the pod went off the officers that where there all 3 of them that is all that officers we had on that side. Responded they did a wonderful job. When the rec field went off the officers on the ground did an outstanding job. The 2 officers in the tower could have and should have prevented it from going that far. We have been told several time in brifing that we are authorized to use force from the tower if something like that happens. Those officers did not do that. they were told by each supervisor that was there to fire over the radio and they failed to do so. The put the risk of the officers on the ground at risk because they had to go on the rec field while this was going on and use force. That is not okay. Put people up there that will do there job. I hope the right person reads this and this gets fixed. HB

I agree about the DW. It seems the focus has been more on keeping inmates and their family members happy, rather than focusing on the safety and security of the institution and the officers that run it. Not to say that locking the yard down would have prevented what happened yesterday, I don't think it would have, it probably would have just delayed it. If these scumbags want to stab each other bad enough, they are going to find ways to do it.
None the less, many of the decisions by the people upfront (ie the DW, central office) have been suspect. Now it's all about where he go from here. Are we going to have visits today or next week, just to keep the inmates and family members happy? Or are we going to do what all the officers here know needs to be done? I hope its the latter, but I suspect it will be the former.
Not all inmates are "scumbags"! I agree that alot of them are, but keep in mind some officers are no better than an inmate! How do you expect those inmates who are trying to just do their time and come home to learn from a corrupt officer???
The DW should not have allowed the yard to be run as normal when there are so few staff....You not only put inmates at risk but the good officers at risk too. Something needs to be done about this!
Let's give the officers there that day props everyone came together and protected each other as a team, lets remember the good, we should all be proud of each other and remember out there on the yard we are all we've got so lets stick together and just refuse if its unsafe to proceed they can't make us do something if we stick together and refuse.
There is no reason why the yard should not run the way it is designed to be ran.Morey Unit is a close custody facility. And for that reason it should be a controlled movement yard the meaning of that is exactly what it spells CONTROLLED if you have three officers on the yard with 100 inmates that is not controlled. If visitation staff has to drop what they are doing while runing visitation which is the job they are responsible for, to answer to an emergency call on the radio. Then it is not being ran the way it is suppose to be ran.You also need to remember that alot of these inmates are at morey on overides, which only means that detention units get paid hazardas pay to work around these inmates and we dont. Not because they are less dangerous because they are not.But because they stayed ticket free only to come to a yard like morey or buckley where they can have more freedom to comit more crimes...So that only means that when you run a yard like morey or buckley understaff with too many inmates and only 3 staff on the yard it is not controlled movement if your 3 staff members cant control a situation when it happens! that is only asking for trouble.I know some people might say "IF YOU CAN HANDLE IT FIND ANOTHER JOB" well sat proved that first we can handle it the incident on saturday was handled very well.WHY? you may ask thats because we had eachothers back. Its not an easy job what we do but I do give credit where credit is earned...Morey does an awsome job getting it all done sometimes putting there life on the line understaff to get the job done..To the higher ups if you are reading this and have the power to resolve the issue lets try and avoid a bigger problem by running the closed custody yards the way they are suppose to be ran safely.....From concerned officer
I'm a former Morey Unit officer who was assaulted by an inmate early on where the prison was still new (Red side was just opening at the time).
Even back then we ran under-staffed. At the time of the incident, I was working 2 pods (100 inmates) alone and running back and forth between them trying to lock everyone down after returning from the cafeteria.
It's sad to hear that things haven't changed there.
I aggre you have to trust the Officers that you place in the tower. you need to know be able to trust they will do what is nessesary to contol disturbances on the yard. we are always outnumbered and harms way. people that do not posess the required mentality to take a shot if they have to to save a staff member or even onother inmates should not be posted in the tower, i have experiance in shooting from the tower at morey. 40 inmates fighting and only 1 officer trying to stop them not good odds. thats why u need tower officers that will stop the situation from getting worse and people getting hurt. at least shoot some gas if they cant breath they cant fight.. ok im done ranting just pls dont put certain officers in the Tower anymore its unsafe
Yeah! You're all a bunch of wussy-men, faggity, no-grammar having ding-a-lings!
