FLORENCE - Officials with the Arizona Department of Corrections say an inmate at the state prison in Florence is dead and his cellmate is considered a suspect in the apparent homicide.
Authorities say 22-year-old Alexandru Usurelu was found unresponsive in his housing unit at Arizona State Prison Complex-Eyman's Special Management Unit. He was pronounced dead by the emergency medical responders Monday night.
The DOC says Usurelu was housed in a two-man cell. They say an investigation into the death is ongoing and being conducted by the department's Criminal Investigations Unit.
Usurelu was admitted to the state's prison system in December 2003. He was serving a 40-year sentence on a second-degree murder conviction out of Maricopa County.
